Time problems

Matt and I restarted making our lures, because we both made a cut  that ruined them so today we restarted. But today we had more experience, skill and better equipment. We have started making my lure but we ran out of time to start making Matt's. It is hard because neither Matt or I are good with saws. I was really looking forward to using the new airbrush, but we ran out of time. Never mind - there's always next week.

Sanding and Chopping Balsa

Balsa wood is extremely soft and light. Today we started making our lure. Darryn had bought a plank of balsa wood. First we drew our designs on the wood. Then we got a saw and cut it out. So we had a square version of our lure. Next we used a craft knife to make it rounder. Finally we had to use sand paper to smoothen the bumps. The hardest bit I found was using the craft knife to round it. My knife wasn't as sharp as Matt's and I couldn't get the technique quite right. But next week Matt and I plan to do the painting and add the wires.

Foiling a lure

At passion time Darryn had found an awesome video on painting lures and getting the scales. All you need is an air brush, tin foil, a net and wood. Its cool because he also shows you how to make the gills and fins.  Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIG4MYXjs1M to watch the video.  Next week we are planning on starting to make the lures. Using a air brush to paint the lures is faster than a paint brush and comes with a better out come.

Chess and Passion Time

At chess time we had the opportunity to take an advanced lesson, beginner lesson or play a game. I chose to play a game of chess  against Bruno and I won. Can you guess what place I am? I also did passion time Matt and I decided to make a lure that is like a joint. It is ether going to look like  a brown trout or a rainbow trout. If you guessed I am 3rd on the leader board, you are correct!

Yellow Stripe

What my paint job will look like.

What Matt's paint job will look like.
Matt and I are still planning out what we are going to make our lures out of and what they will look. Our plan is to have a swivel part way through the lures body to make it look like an injured fish trying to get to the bottom of the lake/river. I think we will use Manuka wood because it is strong and heavy so it is easy to cast. There will be two hooks so it has more chance of it hooking a fish.
We think we  are going to paint it black and gold. Matt will make his stripes go up and down. Matt has called his Bumble Bee. I will make my stripes go side ways and mine will be called Yellow Stripe. We still have a bit of research to do around how fish see colours and what makes them strike a lure.

Passion time

Did you know that fish bite the lure because they are curious or annoyed by it!!  Matt and I chose to make lures like Rapala but with our own twist. We will make them out of wood and plastic. We are going to add a bib to make them go deeper. There is going to be a swivel part way through the lures body to make it look like an injured fish.

Passion time

For passion time Matt and I are going to make fishing lures that will catch brown trout. My aim is to at least make one lure and catch some trout with it. We will be making tobys. For the first toby we will be painting it with glow in the dark paint and for the second toby we will paint it with metallic.  This passion project should last about 8 weeks (minimum).
